Resilience...Not Your Typical "Soft" Skill

Leaders must be resilient, especially amid the challenges facing higher education. Dr. Michael Lane, PRESS faculty member specializing in Exercise Physiology, had the opportunity to speak on the topic of resilience and explore various approaches to develop resilience as an academic leader during this year’s Faculty Leadership Institute at EKU. During the session, he was able to interject his wisdom, unique personality, and personal experiences to highlight the importance of an academic leader’s role at EKU, the need for resilience and practical ways in which each leader can develop this skill.

Like all skills, the "ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change" needs to be developed in ourselves, showcased to those we lead and encouraged in those around us. Through thought provoking questions, personal anecdotes, and practical solutions he encouraged those in attendance to conceptualize their own situations and ways to improve and seek growth through "misfortune or change". Life creates the opportunities to build resilience, we choose whether we are prepared and ready to grow!

What do you do to to ensure your resilience?
