PETE Majors Visit Redbird School
Dr. John Ferguson's PHE 323 - Elementary Physical Education methods class recently took a road trip to Redbird Mission School in Beverley, KY at which they taught all the physical education classes at the P-12 school. A total of 10 students made the trip which involved staying overnight in the small rustic rural community. The Physical Education Teaching majors taught physical education classes for kindergarten up to high school students.
Redbird Mission School is a private school in the rural, southeastern Appalachian region of Kentucky, approximately a two hour drive from Richmond. It is partially funded by the United Methodist Church as well as private donations. The school has few electronic devices and ony one phone.
The PETE students drew heavily from their coursework and Dr. Ferguson's mentorship to provide a comprehensive and exciting physical education learning environment for Redbird children in this economically disadvantaged region. A great learning experience it was for both Redbird and EKU PE majors.
