Holzapfel Wins Outstanding Thesis Award

Simon Holzapfel and his poster - "Effects of Endurance Training on the Relationship Between Digit Ratio (2D:4D) and VO2 max."

Former graduate student Simon Holzapfel was awarded the Graduate Studies Outstanding Thesis award for his research poster entitled, "Effects of Endurance Training on the Relationship Between Digit Ratio (2D:4D) and VO2 max" at the EKU Scholar's Assembly on April 18. Holzapfel, who is currently studying for his PhD in exercise science at Arizona State University had previously won the Outstanding Graduate Poster Award for the same research at the EKU Poster Day in 2013. The research examined the relationship between the ratio of the index finger (2D) and the ring finger (4D) in terms of testosterone produced and how that relationship is mediated by endurance training. The research showed that maximal oxygen consumption (VO2 max) is better correlated to performance than 2D:4D, especially in women. The work was also presented at the 2013 American College of Sports Medicine annual meeting in Indianapolis.
