ESS Honor Awards Day 2013

Fifteen students and one alumnus received most outstanding awards at the 2013 Department of Exercise and Sport Science Honor Awards Day ceremony held Friday, May 3 in Richmond. Award winners and their family and friends joined Department faculty and staff for a buffet lunch preceding the ceremony. Dean Deborah Whitehouse brought greetings from the College of Health Sciences and Faculty Emeriti were recognized. The event was held in conjunction with the Department's first ever Research Poster Symposium. Professor Matthew Sabin presented outstanding poster awards to Simon Holzapfel (thesis division) and Lindsey Addison, Jessy Geary, and Jonathan Stone (undergraduate division), winners from among the 16 posters presented.

The following award winners were then announced:

NASPE Student Major of the Year: Joshua Hartlage

Outstanding Alumnus: David Werner, Athletic Trainer, University of Florida

Outstanding Freshman: Alexander Molen

Oustanding Junior: Kelsey Neumann

Outstanding Senior: Tyler Horn

Outstanding Graduate Student: Allisha Guzdial, Krista Goss-Billingsley (tie)

Outstanding Dance Minor: Cortlyn Todd

Service Merit Award: Maggie Doty

Leadership Merit Award: Toni Garrett

Scholarship Merit Award: Adam Diamond

Leslie H. Leach Scholarship: Zach Irvine

Fred Darling Physical Education Leadership Award: Caitlin Adams

Mr. David Werner received the Outstanding Alumnus Award from Professor Emeritus Dr. Bobby Barton. David is a 1991 Bachelor of Science (Athletic Training) graduate of EKU. He later received a Master of Arts in Teaching at the University of Louisville in 1994. Since then, he has been employed as an athletic trainer with the Baltimore Orioles organization, the Louisville Shooters of the Global Basketball Association, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and currently, the University of Florida Gators. He served as the Head Athletic Trainer for the USA Men's Basketball U-18 FIBA Americas Championships in 2012 and will do so again for the U-19 World Championships in 2013. Mr. Werner spoke of the wonderful relationships established at EKU and how his professors were always there to help him succeed.
