Exercise for Adults with Chronic Conditions-Eastern Kentucky University


Program Highlights

The Adults with Chronic Conditions exercise program is for adults aged 18-100 years of age.  This program follows the academic calendar of Eastern Kentucky University and is offered 10 months of the yar.  The fall program is 12 weeks and runs September through December, the spring program runs February through May.  The summer session is mid-May through mid-July.  The Exercise and Sports Science Continuing Education and Outreach departments are involved with the program.

Adults in the program receive exercise programs based on their needs and goals.  Exercise programs are put together based on initial screening, testing and personal goals.  One on one assistance is provided by qualified undergraduate and graduate student trainers.

Program Highlights

Participants will include adults with:

*Neurological conditions:  Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's, Fibromyalgia
*Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis
*Low back pain, obesity
*Total knee, hip or shoulder replacement
*Cardiovascular disease
*Other chronic conditions

Exercise may include activities to improve

*Cardiovascular endurance (treadmill, stationary bike, elliptical machines)
*Muscular strength and endurance
*Balance training

The cost of the program is $60.00 per semester.  Classes are twice per week for 12 weeks.  A sliding pay scale and grants are available upon request.  Seniors over 65 pay $5.00 registration fee.


Adults may call Community Education at +1 (859) 622-1228 to register for the Adults with Chronic Conditions Exercise classs'.  Registration will be on a first come, first serve basis, and will be limited to 40 adults per semester.  Although we would like to be able to serve all adults, the setting may not be appropriate for all conditions.
